Interior Painting Prep: What Professional Painters Do Differently
The difference between a paint job that looks good for a month and one that looks great for years comes down to one word: preparation. Here is what happens before the first coat of paint goes on in a professional interior painting project.
Inspection and Damage Assessment
Before anything else, every wall and ceiling surface is inspected. We look for nail pops, hairline cracks, loose drywall tape, water stains, rough patches from previous repairs, and areas where caulk has separated between trim and walls. These issues need to be fixed first - paint does not hide them, it highlights them.
Hole and Crack Repair
Every hole is filled with proper patching compound - not just caulk. Large holes get a mesh patch and multiple coats of compound. Cracks are opened slightly, filled, and sanded smooth. The goal is an invisible repair.
Sanding
Walls are sanded to create a smooth surface for paint to adhere to and to feather out any patches or repairs. This step is commonly skipped by budget painters - and it shows. Sanding also helps paint bond to previously glossy surfaces.
Caulking
Gaps between walls and trim, around window frames, and at ceiling lines are caulked with paintable caulk. This creates clean, sealed transitions between surfaces. Without caulking, paint cracks in these gaps and the edges look rough.
Priming
Primer is applied to all repaired areas, bare surfaces, and anywhere the existing paint is stained or inconsistent. Primer ensures uniform absorption so the finish coat looks even. Skipping primer leads to flashing - visible differences in sheen where patches were made.
Protection
Floors are covered with drop cloths. Furniture is moved and covered. Light switches, outlet covers, and door hardware are removed or carefully masked. Tape is applied to edges where different surfaces meet.
Why It Matters
All of this happens before the first coat of finish paint touches the wall. It is time-consuming. It is not glamorous. But it is what makes a professional result possible. When you skip these steps, the paint may look acceptable on day one - but within months you will see every shortcut.
At OV Property Solutions, preparation is the majority of every project. That is why our finishes look right and last.
