Best Paint Colours for Northern Ontario Homes

Choosing paint colours for a Northern Ontario home is different from choosing for a home in Toronto or Vancouver. Our light is different - lower sun angles, long winters with snow-reflected light, shorter summer evenings. Colours that look warm and inviting in a GTA showroom can look completely different on a wall in Timmins.

Understanding Northern Light

Northern Ontario homes get less direct sunlight, especially in winter months. North-facing rooms can feel particularly cold and grey. This means:

  • Cool colours (pure greys, blues, blue-greens) can feel harsh and unwelcoming
  • Warm neutrals tend to work better - they counteract the cool light
  • White matters - pure bright whites can feel stark, while warm whites feel inviting

Recommended Palettes for Timmins Homes

Warm whites:
Benjamin Moore Simply White, White Dove, Swiss Coffee. These have enough warmth to avoid the clinical feel of pure white in low-light conditions.

Warm greys and greiges:
Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter, Edgecomb Gray, Balboa Mist. These are grey-beige hybrids that work in both natural and artificial light without looking cold.

Soft neutrals:
Benjamin Moore Manchester Tan, Shaker Beige. Classic warm neutrals that suit the character of many Timmins homes.

For accent walls:
Hale Navy, Iron Mountain, Kendall Charcoal. Deep, rich tones that add depth without overwhelming a room.

Trim and moulding:
Chantilly Lace or Simply White in semi-gloss. Clean, crisp, and timeless.

For Rental Properties

Keep it simple and universal. One neutral colour throughout - Edgecomb Gray or Balboa Mist walls, Simply White trim. This combination photographs well, appeals to the widest range of tenants, and is easy to touch up between turnovers.

Test Before You Commit

Always test paint colours on your actual walls before committing. Buy sample pots and paint large swatches (at least 2 feet square) on multiple walls in the room. Observe the colour at different times of day - morning light, overcast afternoon, and evening with lights on. Colours shift dramatically between these conditions, especially in Northern Ontario.
